Caroline Hill

Founder of 228 Accelerator and the DC Equity Lab

Caroline Hill is an educational leader with a focus on academic and social development of all students, especially students of color. Her goal is to build equitable learning models where all students can be educated together. She has founded two education organizations that drive this mission forward—the DC Equity Lab and 228 Accelerator—and was a co-founder of Equity Design Collaborative.

Marian Dingle

Teacher in a Montessori Environment

Marian Dingle currently teaches fourth and fifth grades in a Montessori environment. As a veteran educator, she has presented to math educators at NCTM Annual, Twitter Math Camp, and state math, gifted and ESOL conferences. As a Heinemann Fellow, she is currently researching positive cultural identity and its effects on students. Further, she amplifies the work of mathematicians of color as a contributing writer for the Global Math Department newsletter, and blogs about the intersections of social justice and mathematics.

Silas Kulkarni

President of Teaching Lab

Silas Kulkarni is co-founder and President of Teaching Lab, a nonprofit devoted to closing the opportunity gap through teacher-led professional learning. Before founding Teaching Lab, he worked as a math teacher; in 2011, his students in Southeast DC broke the citywide, all-time record for 8th grade math scores, scoring 100% proficient or above, with 62% scoring advanced. He has presented, published research, and led trainings around the country.

Dr. Timothy Shanahan

Professor at the University of Illinois at Chi­cago

Tim is a past president of the International Literacy Association and a distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chi­cago, where he was Founding Di­rector of the UIC Center for Literacy. Previously, he was director of reading for Chicago Public Schools. He is author/editor of more than 200 publications on literacy education. His research emphasizes the connections between reading and writing, literacy in the disciplines, and improvement of reading achievement.

Sharon Walpole

Author of Bookworms K-5 Reading and Writing

Sharon Walpole, Ph.D. is Professor in University of Delaware’s School of Education and Director of the Professional Development Center for Educators. She earned the International Literacy Association’s Jerry Johns Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading award in 2018, the University of Delaware’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016, and the National Reading Conference Early Career Achievement Award in 2007. She is the author of Bookworms K-5 Reading and Writing, an open education resource published by the nonprofit Open Up Resources and offered to teachers for free. She designs and provides direct support for teachers and leaders in schools whose students struggle in reading and writing.

Christina Riley

Director of Curriculum Design for EL Education

Christina Riley is currently the Director of Curriculum Design, overseeing curriculum content design for EL Education. Prior to this, she was a lead designer on the nationally renowned EL Education English Language Arts curriculum, which is currently EdReports’ highest-rated elementary ELA curriculum. Before joining EL, Christina served as an Elementary Curriculum Design Specialist for Socratic Arts, designing a STEM curriculum for elementary students, and participated in various curriculum design projects as an independent consultant including creating educational resources for middle school students for a NASA/ISTE project.

Fawn Nguyen

Mathematics Teacher at Mesa Union Junior High

Fawn Nguyen is a mathematics teacher at Mesa Union Junior High. She has presented to math educators at CMC-North and Twitter Math Camp. Additionally, she shares her wisdom through her website, Finding Ways, where she tells stories that are mainly about teaching and learning mathematics in the classroom—although she also sometimes writes about growing up in Vietnam or growing roots in California.

John Stevens

Instructional Math and Technology Coach

John is an instructional math and technology coach for Chaffey Joint Union High School District who has also taught high school Geometry, Algebra 1, middle school Math, Service Learning, and Robotics, Engineering, and Design since 2006. He runs a site called Would You Rather? which is dedicated to getting students talking about math. He is the co-author of The Classroom Chef, a book designed to help teachers take risks, and the author of Table Talk Math, a book for families and schools looking to have more math-based conversations in the classroom and beyond. Phil Daro

Author of the Mathematics CCSS

Phil Daro served on the writing team of the mathematics Common Core State Standards. He also works in a partnership of the University of California, Stanford and others with the Oakland and San Francisco Unified School Districts for the Strategic Education Research Partnership (SERP), with a focus on mathematics and science learning.

Jessica Reid Sliwerski

CEO of Open Up Resources

Jessica Sliwerski is Open Up Resources' Chief Executive Officer. Previously, she has worked as a teacher, a district literacy coach, and a co-founder and Chief Academic Officer at an award-winner literacy company. She also enjoys writing—Penguin has published her children's book ``Cancer Hates Kisses.``
